Benchmark the Mold Before You Benchmark the Process

When commissioning a new injection mold, much of the attention naturally turns to developing the process: fill time, transfer position, injection pressure, cushion, recovery, temperatures and ultimately cycle time.

But before establishing the process benchmark, there is another important step:
Establish a benchmark for the mold itself.

Start With a Known Baseline

A new mold provides an ideal opportunity to document how it performs before production hours, scale, contamination and normal wear begin to influence its condition.

The objective is to establish a measurable “fingerprint” of the mold under known-good conditions.

Cooling should be an important part of that fingerprint. Each cooling circuit can be evaluated for flow rate, pressure and temperature performance. Documenting these values provides a baseline against which the mold can be compared throughout its production life.

Validate the Cooling System

Simply knowing that water is flowing through a mold doesn’t necessarily tell you how effectively each circuit is performing.

During preventive maintenance, cooling circuits can be checked against their original values. A reduction in flow or change in pressure may indicate scale buildup, contamination, restrictions or another developing issue.

Likewise, if cycle time increases, part dimensions begin drifting or quality changes, the original mold benchmark provides a logical starting point for troubleshooting.

Instead of immediately changing machine parameters to compensate, ask:
